HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

In this photo from 1984 taken at a pre-school Halloween party, Mike carves a jack-o-lantern for 5-year-old Clinton, a.k.a. Skeletor.

  1. I told Silas about how we had to clean out the pumpkins and draw the face on and then Dad would come along with his knife and do the fun part (carving). In hindsight, probably good not to have children wielding knives—especially us.

  2. I submitted this photo to the "Blast from the Past" feature of the Tribune and it was published last week. My mother told the story about Grandpa Portfors who came into the house while sister Nina was carving her pumpkin. He was afraid she would cut herself, so he insisted on doing it for her, and he cut himself. Jack-o-lanterns were always simple, ghoulish faces in my world. It's only been in the last 30 years or so that I've seen fancy designs. And with that came kits of safer (if not better) tools.

  3. I like the new tools. Silas helped me cut open the top of a pumpkin by holding the tool handle with me. They aren't very sharp, really, but the serration is effective. I've tried those fancy designs before and now I usually just do a simple, classic face. I don't really want to be carving a pumpkin for hours.

  4. In the past, we have done some nice pumpkin designs. And you might in the future, too, but I also find it difficult to put my time into something that isn't lasting.
