Mike looked up from watching television at dusk last night to see two young white tail bucks in the farmyard. One moved on through, but the other remained on the bank above the clothesline between the poplar trees and the bramble bush. We crept to the sun porch and Mike took pictures through the glass, fiddling with the camera settings to disable the flash. The one here is the best of the lot.
Deer are naturally curious, but apparently white tail are more wary than mule deer. I have to say, though, that the fellow in the picture was really not too concerned. Despite our use of the camera flash, he was only spooked once. He quickly moved a few feet into the field and stared at us for a moment or two. But he really wanted to graze on our lawn so he came right back.
It just goes to prove how diligent we have to be in this environment to protect our vegetation. I wonder if the deer will be more interested in the yard since the fields lie fallow this year.
Oh . . . and I don't know if Nellie saw the deer or if she just generally didn't like the way Mike and I were acting. She took herself off to the laundry room where she stayed until it was time to get her teeth brushed. KW

That looks like the exact same fellow that Nick and I saw when we were checking on the elderberry trees on the 4-wheeler. Did we tell you about it? We stopped briefly at the edge of the canyon to look off to the side and when we turned forward, that guy was just 20 yards away staring intently at us. It was a bit creepy, really.
Yes, I believe you mentioned the deer you saw. But they all look alike, you know. (LOL)
I had to laugh about Nellie. For a hunting dog she is the biggest wuss!
Maybe Nellie knows the scent of this particular deer and doesn't feel threatened. Sure. One charge from that deer and she'll remember.
I wonder if Nellie feels that when you are taking charge of a situation, she can relax.
Great photo. Another framable moment.
Oh no, Leah. I should have explained that better. Nellie was hiding in the bathroom. It was all too weird for her! Last night we had some distant thunder and lightning, so Nellie hid in the bathroom because I wouldn't let her sit on my lap.
Ah ha! The old hide in the bathroom because I'm afraid and nobody loves me trick.
Okay, I'm going to try this again--Google and it's minions, which includes Blogger, have held me hostage for the past few days and only through hours of work by Eric tonight am I able to get back.
So, what I attempted to say several days ago is:
Love the deer photo. They are so beautiful. Mom and Dad have tons of them at their house, and even with their penchant for eating the flowers and all the fruit off the trees, they are appreciated and enjoyed. A tiny fawn even slept in their driveway for hours a year or so ago, protected by Dad.
Chris, thanks for persevering and coming back to post your comment. I know folks in Clarkston who enjoy having the deer visit. They are beautiful.
I don't know the nature of your problem with Blogger, but yesterday I was unable to access my dashboard in the conventional way. So, I visited yours, clicked on "dashboard," and I was home free!
Glad I could be of help! :-)
