Mike sits in Ina's place before the re-built fireplace at the farmhouse. |
December 2012
Grandma Ina would have called it a dull day. I use the word "bleak." It just wasn't a pretty day. I wasn't inspired to take a lot of pictures.
We arrived at the farmhouse at 9:15 and stayed until 3:00. Mike wanted to check the grounds and equipment. I exchanged things I returned to the house for other things I need in town. That's the way it works.
Mike delivered the Christmas tree from storage at the barn and I set it up. I'm not nearly finished with the decorating, but I've made a good start.
Tomorrow: Ina begins baking in 1936.

Good art direction of the photo of Mike by the fireplace. In the future, your great grandchildren will love that one. They'll put photos of him out in the wilderness beside this one. They'll say something like: "My great grandpa would spend all day hiking for geocaches or doing chores at the farm and then he relaxed by the fire." Then they'll say "Great grandma Kathy was always behind the camera. We don't have many photos of her."
In the slide show (on the right) #7 of 12 is a wonderful shot of your mom & dad, Kathy. What year was it taken?
Great-grandpa Mike is just more photogenic than Great-grandma Kathy. Grandpa Mike is slim, trim, and fit. Grandma Kathy is -- well, not. Mike is also the "do-er." However, there are pictures of Great-grandma. She just screens them.
I also screen some photos of Mike, though. I think I catch him in better moments than he catches me.
I agree, Leah -- that picture of Mom and Dad is great. Daddy was 55; Mother had just turned 50. They were having a good time. (I don't think I was.) It was taken after Christmas in 1959. They had just re-decorated the house and were enjoying the new furnishings. Daddy set up that shot with the timer, but in the end I look like an afterthought. I'll see if I can crop it.
As far as the photo of your mom & dad in 1959, I can imagine that your dad was working on the camera timer setting for a while. You just got tired of waiting and didn't listen when he told you to look at the camera. Right?
I'm glad Leah pointed out the new slideshow. I'm so focused on the post that I fail to look around. Those are really good pictures!
The tree looks wonderful! Somehow a house never truly looks decorated until the tree is up, so ours is looking a little under-dressed as yet.
I, too, screen pictures although I'm usually the photographer. John took one yesterday of me and Daniel with his phone and sent it out. I didn't even look at it because I'm certain I'd have cringed at the thought of it having been sent out.
Leah - Were you there that night? Did you know my dad? That's exactly what happened. He had me sit there while he fiddled with the camera and finally let me hold the doll. I'm afraid I ruined more than one picture. I was just thinking, though -- it might be months before Daddy would have the film developed. We're so fortunate today to have instant playback.
The slide show photos aren't all great, but I hoped they would evoke happy memories for anyone who remembers the era.
There are also some very cute little children in the slide show. :) I enjoyed those pictures. Brought back good memories. :)
