“Pocketa-whir-pocketa-whir-pocketa-whir-whir-whir-whir-whir,”
sang the old treadle sewing machine.
“Up
on the housetop reindeer pause,
Out
jumps dear old Santa Claus;” sang Shirley.
Ina
and Shirley had combined ironing day with mending day. Shirley was ironing
while Ina mended and also finished the nightgown for Sadie’s doll. As they worked,
Shirley cheerfully sang lively Christmas songs -- tunes suggested by the whir
of the treadle machine.
“Whir-whir-whir-whir
whir.”
“Fa-la-la-la-la,
la-la-la-la.”
Ina
had expected company from town today, but plans were cancelled due to winter
weather and Christmas doings. She was disappointed and relieved at the same
time. She really had plenty to do to finish the nightdress and the mending.
Combining
ironing day and mending day really made sense, Ina thought. Pressing seams with
a hot iron made all the difference in the look of the finished product.
As
daylight began to fade, Ina finished the little gown and tried it on the doll. “It
will do,” she said, admitting to herself that she was having fun with this
project. Tomorrow, maybe she’d have time to make a little dress. KW

I love it! Toasty warm on a cold, snowy night! And sewing certainly does turn out better when seams are pressed--can't sew without my iron. (Our modern irons are a blessing!)

I always thought that song said, "reindeer paws". Ha ha! I do know that reindeer have hooves, not paws, I just didn't think about it too deeply.
