ANOTHER SKIMPY CHRISTMAS -- DAY 14

A hearty breakfast was the norm on the farm – hot cereal and toast for everyone with the addition of bacon and eggs for Jack. And of course, the table included rich farm cream, homemade butter, strawberry jam, and elderberry jelly.

“Well,” said Jack as he rose from the table, “today I’m going to scout out a nice Christmas tree for us. I want one fairly close so that Sadie can go with me to cut it.” And off he went, heading across the north field to the draw where he hoped to find a “table” tree.

Shirley and Ina worked quickly to finish the breakfast dishes, and then returned to the work at hand – getting ready for Christmas. Ethel and Sadie would arrive on Saturday, so it was important to finish the doll project this week. Ina remembered a nice piece of cloth that would be enough for the doll’s dress. She was saving it for a special project, but after all, what could be more special than this doll for a loved granddaughter?

Newborn baby dress is a perfect fit

And then, just as she was spreading the fabric and gathering the pattern pieces, she remembered a baby dress of similar fabric that other dolls had worn. Why reinvent the wheel, she asked herself? She knew the very box where it was stored, and sure enough! See for yourself. It was perfect for Cuddles.

Ina was relieved. Now she could concentrate on finishing other gifts. There’s always plenty to do before Christmas – and after all, a person should enjoy pondering the reason for the season with the help of quality holiday reading.

At the noon meal, Jack announced that his Christmas tree scouting expedition has been successful. He had found a small tree that he and Sadie could easily access, even in the snow. Selecting the Christmas tree was his part in the process. The choice was his and his alone.

A perfect dress! And now on to other things as you say--the Day is coming upon us and time for the real meaning to take precedence.
