DAY 23

Today in 1931, Jack Dobson crossed the north field to the trees above the draw and cut down the little fir tree he had marked last fall. He set it up on the library table according to Ina’s instructions. This was his part, and he was glad to do it.

Then Shirley decorated it with a few red balls and tinsel carefully saved from previous years, and as a final touch, she clipped the candle holders onto the tree, inserting a brand new candle into each one. Then she stood back to admire her work.

Now that the tree was ready, Ina took over. After I filled the little Christmas boxes with treats, I fell upon the boxes of gifts we had received from the family. Ethel’s was wrapped with green string and I cut this off and used it to tie the packages onto the tree, being foolish about green string. The packages were all so pretty and I had a great time. I hung them on the tree and put them under it. – Ina

I don’t know why, but tying gifts on the tree or hiding them in the branches never appealed to me. My dad would occasionally do it. I guess it makes sense if you have a small gift you don’t want to get lost among the larger ones. And I can see that it was logical for Ina to tie the little boxes of treats onto the tree. They were part of the decorations.

Our gifts are wrapped and under the tree, tied with yarn from my extensive stash. I know that Ina reused wrapping paper as well as string. I used new wrapping paper, most of it printed on newsprint by the local newspaper. Some years I use fabric gift bags, but I forgot to bring them from the farm.

Christmas 2024 is upon us. Young Silas and his parents will be here soon, and I still have to clean the kitchen counters. Better stop visiting and get with it. KW

Merry Christmas!! My cleaning lady has arrived and I just ordered the pizzas for our traditional day before Christmas Eve dinner of Papa Murphy's. The dishwasher is running and the used towels are on time delay in the washer. The crew will arrive about six and I think I'm about ready for them! Have a wonderful time with your family!! Love to all of you! ❤️

And a Merry Christmas to you and your clan, too, Chris! The guest bed is ready and the bathroom is clean. We're having chicken pot pie for dinner tonight. We still have lots of cooking to do, but they will help with that.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, I enjoy all that you share and wish you only wellness and sound mind. I too do not get to enjoy all my family and I know you will miss those that are not there. I still do. Be well always.

And a Merry Christmas to you and yours. And a Happy New Year, too. I trust you didn't get any snow for Christmas. We didn't either. They are forecasting rain/snow mix, but nothing sticking on the streets or sidewalks. Maybe even that won't happen.
