THE TWELFTH NATIONAL HOLIDAY

Today is Super Bowl Sunday. It’s not an official holiday, but it might as well be. The day has a festive feel. I cleaned the kitchen counter, cleared some clutter, put out some munchies, opened a bottle of sparkling cider, made chili for supper, and lit some candles – not necessarily in that order.

Years ago, when I worked for the historical society, I participated on some community committees. One “mover and shaker” – a woman of statewide renown who shall remain nameless – suggested a fundraiser on a certain Sunday. One of the men quickly responded, “That’s Super Bowl Sunday.”

In my own mind, that was enough to settle the issue. Super Sunday would not be a good date. But our woman asked, “Is that a big deal?”

“Yes, it is,” replied the man, as others quietly agreed.

She was incredulous, so the man came back from a stronger standpoint: “Do not schedule it on that Sunday. No one will come.”

And that’s the way it is with Super Sunday. Even if you don’t care, even if you want to do something else, don’t mess with Super Sunday.

It’s raining, and even though the day is dreary, we should welcome the rain. And we anticipate some cold temps this next week – highs in the 30s, lows in the 20s. That’s cold in our valley. And it might rain or snow. KW

I confess that Super Sunday is pretty much ignored in this house unless a team we like is playing.

I agree with Chris. This Super Bowl is clouded with the fact that a blatant pass interference call was not made, making the outcome of the game against New Orleans go the way it should not have gone. I think the game is rigged on many fronts. The NFL is a sham, and a very expensive one.

It was a disappointment this year, all right. But -- Mike enjoys football, so he watched it. And the neighbors had people in.

During the game, I cleared out my downloads, filing away a collection of embroidery designs and doll clothes patterns. Then I made notes on the muumuu I'm altering for the mini doll, made the chili, talked to Chuck, texted with Hallie, and lit the candles. It was a nice afternoon.

Yep--it was just Sunday here! No TV, lots of relaxation. A nice day.
